SOS Children's Villages' activities in the country
In 1950 a group was established in New York to support the work of SOS Children's Villages in Austria. In 1963 this association was registered under the name of "Friends of SOS Children's Villages Inc.", which now increased its efforts through the sponsoring of SOS Children's Villages in developing countries. 25 years later SOS-Kinderdorf International decided to establish SOS Children's Villages in the USA to supplement the traditional foster family system. The first SOS Children's Village became operational in Coconut Creek, Florida in 1993 and shortly afterwards a second one followed in Lockport, Illinois. In 2004 the first urban SOS Children's Village in the USA was opened in Chicago.
At present there are three SOS Children’s Villages in the USA.
