SOS Children's Village Migdal Haemek opened its gates on 30 April 1997 and was officially inaugurated on 8 September 1997 by Israeli President Mr Weizmann and SOS Children's Village President Mr Kutin. It is situated near Nazareth and can be reached most conveniently via Haifa or via Tel-Aviv. The SOS Children's Village consists of ten family houses for up to 100 children, a multi-purpose hall, the village director's house, a house for the SOS aunts (family helpers or SOS mother trainees who support the SOS mothers in their daily work and fill in for them when they are ill or on leave), and an administration and service area. Within easy reach of the SOS Children's Village, there is a primary and secondary school, a kindergarten, a sports centre, a swimming bath and a clinic.
The SOS Youth Facility Migdal-Haemek accommodates nine youths from the SOS Children’s Village at the moment. Young people usually move from the SOS Children's Village to an SOS Youth Facility when they start a vocational training course or go on to higher education. Being admitted into an SOS Youth Facility means taking responsibility for oneself and is synonymous to taking a big step towards independence. Being fully aware of this, SOS mothers, the Village Director and a psychologist prepare them carefully for that change. Usually, youths stay up to four years in an SOS Youth Facility.
In January 2005, an SOS Social Centre was added to SOS Children's Village Migdal-Haemek. It mainly provides day care for children from the local community but also runs outreach programmes to help socially weak local families. There are day-care places for up to 15 children, including children from outside the SOS Children’s Village. The outreach programmes comprise women's counselling, information on the prevention of diseases and financing of so-called micro businesses.
