Goal 6: Combat HIV / AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

Dummy picture
Targets by 2015:

  • Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.
  • Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

Diseases Undermine the Development in the Poorest Countries
HIV/AIDS, malaria, measles, polio and tuberculosis cause the deaths of millions of children who do not have good nutrition, sanitation or healthcare. AIDS alone has taken more than 20 million lives. The numbers are staggering, and the disease continues to wreak havoc as mothers and pregnant women become ill, rendering them unable to work or take care of their children.

SOS Children’s Villages responds by:

  • providing support programs (these include schooling, health services and psychosocial support) for HIV/AIDS affected and infected children and their families;
  • giving access to voluntary testing, counseling, retro-viral drugs and treatment;
    carrying out information campaigns on the risk of infection and against discrimination against people with AIDS;
  • improving the quality of life of chronically ill parents through welfare management programs and positive living;
  • empowering children and young people to make informed decisions and negotiate safe sex.
