Targets by 2015:
- Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies; reverse loss of environmental resources.
- Halve the number of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
- Achieve significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers.
No Development Without Environmental Protection
The world’s poorest often suffer the most from environmental degradation. Climate change will affect the world's poorest regions the most; energy is scarce for most of the world’s most vulnerable citizens; and every 15 seconds a child dies from disease caused by unsafe drinking water, poor hygiene and poor sanitation. An estimated 400 million children have no access to clean water, and water-borne diseases kill millions of people per year, and cause many more to become ill. Safe water is often found a long distance from home, and children – often girls – are usually the ones who have to fetch water for the family.
SOS Children’s Villages responds by:
- investing in infrastructure to provide safe drinking water and water treatment programs, especially in times of emergency.
