Target by 2015:
- Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio.
Women’s Reproductive Health is Seriously Neglected
Complications in childbirth claim about 529,000 mothers’ lives each year - the vast majority of them in developing countries. Additionally, birth-related disabilities that go untreated contribute to the poor health of women and this in turn affects their children. Millions of babies never make it past their first week of life, and many who lose their mothers die before their second year.
SOS Children’s Villages responds by:
- providing mobile medical services and skilled birth attendants through the family strengthening programs,
- operating mother and child clinics, which offer ante- and post-natal care as well as childbirth facilities.
