Easter

Easter is a Christian holiday that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter traditions vary around the world but may involve family gatherings, the exchanging of Easter baskets, decorating Easter eggs, religious services and prayer. Easter falls between late March and late April each year depending on the cycle of the moon. In 2009, Easter Sunday is April 12.

Many SOS families across the globe celebrate Easter each year. The occasion is especially meaningful for thousands of SOS children as they share the holiday festivities with their SOS mother, brothers and sisters.

Children decorate Easter eggs and receive Easter gifts in many of our villages. "I like the chocolate eggs that are given by our SOS mother," exclaims a child from the SOS Children's Village Bata in Equatorial Guinea.

Several other Easter traditions take place at our villages throughout the world. Children at the Conakry Village in Guinea recite a traditional Easter poem, a special injera feast is prepared for children at the Bahir Dar Village in Ethiopia and children at the Tres Ríos Village in Costa Rica take an annual field trip during Holy Week. "Last year we went to some swimming pools," says a boy from the Tres Ríos Village. "It was very sunny, and I liked diving into the water."
