Nepal Earthquake

The Situation in Brief

What You Need to Know

On April 25, 2015, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, destroying much of the city and many surrounding villages. It was the worst earthquake to strike the region in more than 80 years. More than 8,600 people died, 2.8 million were displaced, and in all, more than 8 million people were affected by the disaster.

Another challenge is the widespread poverty in the country. Even before the earthquake, Nepal was one of the poorest countries in Asia. More than 1 in 4 families were living in poverty, according to the World Bank.

How the Earthquake Impacts Children

Families today are struggling to rebuild. Fuel shortages, political issues and poor roads make it very challenging for families to get the supplies they need, particularly families who live in remote areas. Many families are still living in tents, and a large number of children are not going to school.

SOS Children’s Villages Impact

How Supporters Like You Are Making a Difference

SOS Children’s Villages has worked in Nepal since 1972. With programs in ten locations, we were able to respond rapidly to the needs of children in the immediate aftermath of the April 2015 earthquake. We did this, through the help of our supporters, by strengthening vulnerable families and providing children who lost their families with temporary and long-term care. To date, some 28,000 children and their families have received help.

Loving, Stable Families for Vulnerable Children

Since 1972, children who lost the care of their families have always had a safe, loving home at SOS Villages across Nepal. We have welcomed 53 children orphaned by the earthquake into SOS Families at a few of our 10 SOS Villages in Nepal. In these cases, the children had no relatives able to care for them. They joined the 1,238 children currently growing up in an SOS Village in Nepal.

Family Support

We run a kinship care program that supports relatives of children orphaned by the earthquake—such as grandparents—who are now raising the children. We are also helping 225 new families find income-generating activities, such as sewing and poultry farming. In addition, we are providing hundreds of families with material assistance such as blankets, mattresses and financial support.

Fun, Safe Childcare Centers

After the earthquake, we set up 25 SOS Childcare Centers where we provided children with informal education and recreational activities, food and other services. At the centers, children who had suffered trauma are provided with counseling and psychological support by trained professionals. Furthermore, the parents of these children have a free and safe place to send their children during the day while they go out and earn money so that they can support their families.

Rebuilding Schools

We have helped rebuild three public schools so far, with another seven schools on the way. We have also provided school supplies to more than 3,000 students.
