Teach Youth to Give Back

From elementary school to high school, fundraisers are a great way to teach youth to give back. Adapt one of the following examples to fit your school fundraiser or create your own way to help needy children.

Elementary School

As a student at Arrowhead Elementary School in New York, Alesia Muklebust organized a fundraiser for SOS Children's Villages after learning about Africa and working on a project about orphaned children.

She called the event "Kicking in for Kids" where each individual paid $1 to take three shots against a professional soccer player.

A school project about orphaned children in Africa sparked the idea.

Middle School

Annie Arnzen was 14 when she visited an SOS Village in Botswana with her father while he was on a business trip. "I went hoping to make a small difference," she said. "After spending a week with the children at SOS I found that they touched my heart and changed me forever."

Annie returned to school in Massachusetts and created A Precious Cause to raise funds for a new SOS Village in Botswana. Working with neighboring schools and churches, she has raised an astonishing $25,000 and continues working toward her goal of $300,000.

Four students at Chadwick School in California, who were studying contemporary Africa, demonstrated their commitment to what they had learned by putting their energies into a fundraising and awareness-building effort.

They designed and sold T-shirts that illustrated the serious issues involved with the diamond trade in Africa. These dedicated students raised hundreds of dollars in support of SOS Children's Villages.

Many people were made aware of the diamond trade through the movie Blood Diamond starring SOS Children's Villages supporters Djimon Hounsou and Leonardo DiCaprio. A portion of the movie was filmed at the SOS Children's Village - Maputo.
