Haiti After The Earthquake

SOS Children’s Villages has provided family-based care and education programs in Haiti for over 30 years. In the days and months immediately following the 7.2 earthquake, SOS was able to rapidly expand these programs, thanks to generous people like you.

Worldwide, SOS Children’s Villages raised over $50 million in 2010 to support our programs in Haiti. Due to this overwhelming response, we no longer need emergency funds for Haiti. However, countless children around the world still need your help!  You can support SOS as we continue to provide loving homes to children in desperate situations like those in Haiti before they are highlighted on the national news. Think of the children who are unseen and whose stories are yet to be told.

Honor Marevie and make a donation today
One story is that of Marevie. Marevie became a shining star of hope at a hopeless time for SOS Santo Children's Village in Haiti. As a baby suffering from severe malnutrition, she was brought back to life after the earthquake by SOS medical staff. Marevie lived to see her second birthday but tragically died in late 2011 after suffering from a heart defect believed to be caused by the severe neglect and malnutrition she suffered as an infant. Marvieve's short legacy is heart-breaking: the first half of her life she suffered, the second half she thrived.

Children all over the world depend on SOS and your contribution. Make a donation today, in honor of Marevie, to support SOS children affected by disaster worldwide.

Funds raised for SOS supported the following achievements in Haiti:
  • The SOS Children’s Village in Santo, outside of Port-au-Prince, still cares for an additional 130 children. To provide long-term care, a second SOS Village will is being planned in Croix-de-Bouquets, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.  The Village will have the capacity to provide loving homes to about 140 children.
  • School enrollment at the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in the Santo Village has increased to 1,190 children. Before the earthquake, only 500 students attended the SOS School in Santo.
  • The third SOS Children’s Village in Haiti will be built in Bourjolie, a community within Les Cayes, a seaport on Haiti's southwestern peninsula. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2012. The SOS Village will have 15 family homes for approximately 135 orphaned and abandoned children. In addition, an SOS Family Strengthening Program will support families along with a new school that will provide free education to over 700 children.

SOS Children's Villages Haiti
For over sixty years SOS has made a long-term investment in children, giving them families, education and a future. We also advocate for child protection in every country where we work. And that’s what we’re doing right now in Haiti: making a long-term commitment to children who have lost their families and need a good education and a bright future. We are also using your contributions to build new facilities, homes, schools and community centers.

Most Vulnerable Must Not Be Forgotten in Haiti

January 11, 2012: At least half of the over 220,000 casualties of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, were children. Many of those who have survived the turmoil of the past two years have been abandoned by families no longer able to provide for them due to poverty and impossible living conditions. Girls, in particular, face sexual violence in makeshift camps. Over 500,000 people still living in camps endure worsening conditions as donor funding and interest in Haiti’s reconstruction wanes. Plan International, SOS Children’s Villages and World Vision call on the European Union (EU) to consider the protection of children and the economic and social support for their families in Haiti a top priority. Two years after the earthquake in Haiti the most vulnerable are still at risk...
