WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 2, 2011) – SOS Children’s Villages and its panel of celebrity judges proudly announced ten finalists for the 2011 Other Mothers Contest. Other Mothers are those who fill the gap - grandparents, uncles and aunts, friends, foster parents, or others who mother a child when biological parents cannot.
Dr. Heather Paul, CEO of the U.S. Headquarters of SOS Children’s Villages is elated that the contest is honoring those who voluntarily make a difference in children’s lives. She says “We are thrilled to honor Other Mothers because SOS Children’s Villages has over 5,000 SOS mothers across the world who are raising orphaned and abandoned children. We are changing children’s lives just as these wonderful Other Mothers do in the US. They all need our support!”
The contest kicked off on Mother’s Day and voting for the most inspirational “Other Mother” will continue until the winner is announced prior to Father’s Day, on June 16. People were asked to nominate the other mother in their lives either in writing or through a brief video. The contest’s panel of celebrity judges that included Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan, Vy Higginsen founder of Gospel for Teens, author Mike Gottfried, and Chris Caruso, Executive Director of GenerationOn has selected ten finalists.
Online voting by the public will pick the Other Mother of the Year! The voting phase will continue through Sunday, June 12th, 2011 at 12:00 pm (PST). Supporters are asked to vote based on the criteria of: the Other Mother’s impact as described in the essay or video, the sincerity of the nominator’s appreciation, the quality of expression and writing, and the emotional value of the nomination. All are invited to vote for Other Mother of the Year!
The Other Mother of the Year will receive: a Thursday-Sunday stay at a Residence Inn by Marriott, a Barnes & Noble NOOK Color eReader, a Schwinn Gateway Bicycle, an Amway Miss America Gift Basket, and an Amway Power of Positive Gift Basket. Moreover, all Other Mother finalists will receive prizes that have been generously donated by sponsors of the Other Mothers Contest.
