May 20, 2011: On May 21, Tanzania, in eastern Africa, will host the first U.S. football game ever played on that continent. That day, Drake University will be up against the CONADEIP, an all-star team from Mexico. The two sides will compete in Moshi, a town in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

A few days before the game the Drake team will hold practices and run a football clinic for local children.

The game is part of the first Global Kilimanjaro Bowl. Afterward, players from both teams will participate in local community service projects. They will work at Moshi’s Kitaa Hope Orphanage and build an addition to the facility. Coaches and players from the U.S. and Mexican teams will then climb Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Taking different routes, they will meet at the top, planting their national and university flags.

The upcoming trip to Africa reflects Drake’s mission and values, according to Drake Athletic Director Sandy Hatfield Clubb. “We strive to provide opportunities that will facilitate leadership, learning and prepare student-athletes to be responsible global citizens and to become champions of positive change.”

SOS Has Served Vulnerable Children in Tanzania for Twenty Years

Positive change is what has driven the work of SOS Children’s Villages for two decades. In fact, SOS has a Children’s Village not far from where the football game will take place.

SOS-Arusha is eight miles outside of its namesake, a tourist city near Mount Kilimanjaro. Associated with the SOS Village is an SOS kindergarten for 100 children and a nearby SOS primary-secondary school that accommodates 500 pupils.
