| The SOS Children's Villages Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) # is 10906. |
October 25, 2010: The
Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), created in 1961, is the largest annual workplace charity campaign in the United States. It is the only campaign authorized to solicit and collect contributions from federal employees in the workplace.
The 2010 CFC started on September 1 and runs through December 15. The SOS Children's Villages CFC # is 10906.
We invite federal employees to donate to SOS Children’s Villages through the CFC because of people like 24-year-old David in Haiti.
Without parents or family able to care for him, David was brought to the SOS Children’s Village at Santo when he was very young. At age 20 he went to university to study English. Happy to be able to reunite with what remained of his biological family, he moved in with his brother and his aunt and uncle. On the morning of January 12 he left early for school.
Heading home from classes at 4:30 pm, his bus got stuck in traffic. At 5 pm he felt the earth moving. When the shaking stopped, he leapt off the bus and ran all the way home. He found nothing but stones. Digging with his bare hands, he soon realised his efforts were futile. "Four years ago I reunited with my family, just so the earth can take them away from me again!"
Surviving for a Purpose
 |
| David grew up at the SOS Children's Village in Santo. He is the only one of this biological family who survived the earthquake. David and other young adults have returned to the Santo Village to find refuge and support emergency relief efforts. |
David told his story to an SOS-Santo staff member, Louis Klamroth, while the two were on route to a community center to distribute food and water about a month after the earthquake.
Crying, David told Louis, "God has something in store for me, he didn’t want me to die." David soon returned to SOS-Santo, knowing he could because the Village Director is like a father to him.
Today David lives with other young adults in SOS-Santo. They have organised themselves to help distribute food to nearby communities. "I am blessed. SOS Children's Villages has given me so much, and now maybe I can give something back." His biggest personal wish is to give his family a proper funeral, and one day to create his own family and build a house that cannot be destroyed by any earthquake.
SOS provides loving, secure homes for more than 80,000 vulnerable children like David, in 132 countries. SOS also helps 1 million children and families outside its Villages by offering education, medical care, and family strengthening programs.
