Other Mothers - SOS Children's Villages

What is an Other Mother?

An Other Mother is a man or woman who "mothered" you when your own biological parent could not. These unsung heroes are sometimes grandparents, sometimes uncles, aunts, family friends, neighbors, teachers or even distant acquaintances who took it upon themselves to help you when you most needed support.

"My grandparents raised me like real parents would."

"My big sister was like my 'other mother.'"

"My aunt was really my 'other mother.'"

"David was always there for us."

Why is SOS Children's Villages Celebrating Other Mothers?

At the heart of each SOS family is the SOS Mother who dedicates her life to raising a generation of orphaned and abandoned children as if they were her own. Worldwide, there are more than 5,250 SOS Mothers who care for 80,000 children in over 500 SOS Children's Villages. They live with their children, care for their children, comfort their children and celebrate with their children. They do all the things a mother would do. Between Mother's Day and Father's Day, we want to recognize the many men and women in America who do the same. Read more about "Other Mother" facts and statistics.

What is the Other Mother Contest?

The Other Mother Contest is an opportunity to tell the world about that special person in your life…your Other Mother!

From May 8th, Mother's Day, to May 22nd, your friends and family nominated their Other Mothers for "Other Mother of the Year!"

On May 30, ten finalist Other Mother candidates were selected by a panel of celebrity judges and the staff of SOS Children’s Villages. The judges include Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan!

"I am so excited to be a part of the Other Mothers Contest," Ms. Scanlan said. “Miss America strives to give self-esteem and moral support to children who are sometimes desperately in need of guidance, just like Other Mothers do. It is wonderful to honor the many women and men in America who care for children who are not their own."

From May 31 to June 12, the public voted to decide on the Other Mother of the Year. See who won the 2011 Other Mothers Contest and read finalist nominations!

About SOS Children’s Villages, SOS Mothers, and Other Mothers

SOS Children’s Villages provides stable homes to children all over the world who do not have their own biological parents to care for them. An SOS Mother heads-up each SOS Home and cares for her SOS children as if they were her own. Over our 60+ year history, we have had many celebrations in honor of the vital contributions of our SOS Mothers, and now we extend the invitation to let the world know about your Other Mother.
