Our driver, Francisco, told us about Limon and the people who live there. We learned that many people who live in Limon came to Costa Rica after being brought to the Carribean as slaves. This was something we didn't know about the country, and it gave us an appreciation for the people of Limon, including Brayan. It took us about 5 hours to drive from San Jose (only 140 km, but the roads are not what we are used to in the U.S.). Unfortunately, Brayan was not at the address we were given (this was another SOS Children's Village). Fortunately, we were able to track down Brayan's address and it was only about a 20 minute drive from our first destination.
We were met by the head of the Village, and she showed us around. Everyone was extremely gracious. We were then brought to Brayan's house and met all of his 'brothers and sisters." Our children took to the other kids immediately, and before you knew it, they were drinking Coca Cola, dancing and jump roping. I've attached some pictures for you. The children are beautiful, as you can see. We were heartened by what SOS Children's Villages is going for these children and for the community. The children seemed extremely well cared for, and it is clear that SOS CV is providing them with a chance for a future they would otherwise not have been able to aspire to. I know Isabelle and DJ felt the same way Adam and I did --- that the money we raised will do a lot of good and will make a difference in Brayan's life. Thank you for the opportunity you provided to us. Being able to visit the Village was an experience we will cherish forever.
After we left the Village, we returned to San Jose, and joined up with our volunteer group the next day. As I may have told you, we participated in a 7-day international volunteer program arranged by Cross Cultural Solutions. I highly recommend this program, as it was life changing for my entire family. We worked in a school in Cartago for children living in extreme proverty. While there, we painted the school and taught in the classroom. The best part, by far, was spending time with these beautiful children. I've also attached a couple of pictures from that experience.
Thank you again for your help and for allowing us to be part of the SOS Children's Village "family."
Best,
Jodie Lesh
