Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio first became involved with SOS Children's Villages in 2007 while filming the movie Blood Diamond in Mozambique.

SOS children were asked to be extras in the film and were able to spend part of their summer break traveling to the location and working on the movie set with DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, and other actors. DiCaprio was extremely touched by his interactions with the children and was thrilled to be a part of such a memorable experience for them.

In Autumn 2009, Leonardo DiCaprio aided SOS again by autographing a custom-designed, one-of-a-kind model elephant that was auctioned through eBay. DiCaprio is well-known for his involvement with environmental causes and this was reflected in the elephant designed for his signature. Greenie was created using items that were recovered, recycled, or renewed.

Proceeds from the DiCaprio-signed elephant auction were donated to support the work of SOS Children's Villages. Though the auction ended on October 15, 2009, the project — Project Zambi, organized by Hasbro, Inc. continues to benefit the 15 million children impacted by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
