Statement – October 24 2025

Statement from CEO, Jill Nosach, of SOS Children’s Villages USA

The truth can never be denied — and by confronting it with honesty and courage, we become stronger and more resolute in our mission to protect and care for children everywhere.

The recent revelations about the past abuse committed by Hermann Gmeiner, founder of SOS Children’s Villages (deceased, 1986), are horrifying and heartbreaking. My first thoughts are with the survivors and to them, I want to say clearly and unequivocally: I believe you, I condemn these acts and I am deeply sorry.

What happened is indefensible. No person, no matter their position or legacy, is above accountability. The trust placed in our organization by children, families and communities is sacred. It was violated, and the pain caused will not be minimized or forgotten.

I fully support the swift and decisive action taken by the International Board to suspend the Austrian association pending a full and transparent disclosure of all ongoing investigations. These steps, as Chair Mimmo Parisi stated, are essential to protect children, uphold the integrity of our federation, and ensure that our organization remains rooted in transparency and accountability.

Hermann Gmeiner does not define SOS Children’s Villages. The millions of children we have served—and the caregivers, staff, volunteers, and supporters who work tirelessly every day—define who we are. Our mission has always been to create safe, stable and loving homes for children who need them most. That mission is more urgent than ever.

I also recognize that words alone are not enough. As SOS Children’s Villages USA, we are committed to:

  • Full transparency and cooperation with all investigations.
  • Strengthening child safeguarding measures to ensure that abuse can never be hidden or ignored.
  • Standing with survivors — listening, learning, and supporting them with compassion and respect.
  • Rebuilding trust through concrete action, not just statements.

This is a painful moment for everyone who believes in our mission. But it is also a defining one. We will not look away. We will not allow this darkness to overshadow the light that so many have worked to bring to children’s lives. Instead, we will face the truth with courage, and build a future grounded in integrity, accountability and care.

To our supporters, partners, and the communities we serve: thank you for holding us accountable and standing with us. Together, we will ensure that the legacy of SOS Children’s Villages is defined by the collective commitment to protect and nurture every child.
