Ethiopia humanitarian crisis

Living through a prolonged drought and protracted regional conflict, children and families in Ethiopia are in crisis.

More than 4.6 million people are displaced from their homes.

More than 10 million people face acute food insecurity and hunger.

More than 1.3 million children are suffering from life-threatening acute malnutrition.

Families losing everything

Since 1974, SOS Children’s Villages has provided safe homes and loving families to children without parental care and strengthened families to prevent separation in Ethiopia.

With decades of humanitarian expertise, SOS Children’s Villages delivers critical and life-saving assistance, ensuring children receive the protection and care they need through multiple programs—like EduCare.

Approximately 85% of the population in Ethiopia relies on agriculture for a sustainable income and nutritious food. But as drought devastates crops and conflict forces people from their homes, children and families are slowly starving—with more than 10 million people living hungry or malnourished.

Our collective impact in Ethiopia

Since 2024, with the support of compassionate people like you, we’ve reached more than 129,000 children and families with life-saving aid and laid the groundwork for long-term, sustainable recovery and resilience. Together, we've:

  • Provided families with cash assistance so they can meet their children’s basic needs.

  • Supported children in receiving a quality education through EduCare.

  • Delivered nutritious food assistance, so children and families have the healthy meals they need to grow, develop and build a brighter future.

  • Supported people with agricultural tools, seeds, animal health services and soil and water conservation training, so they can rebuild their livelihood and earn a sustainable income for their families.

  • Provided financial and skills support to women-headed households, helped establish women’s saving associations and raised awareness of gender-based violence to reduce harmful stigmatizations and build stronger communities.

  • Supported repairing damaged medical facilities, equipped delivery rooms for safe childbirth, supplied medical equipment and medications and trained professionals in psychosocial support.
