Refugee and Migrant Crisis

The Situation in Brief

What You Need to Know

65 million people worldwide have fled their homes because of conflict, unrest or disaster. Children account for more than half the total. Child refugees face incredible risks and dangers.

While the arrival of refugees in Europe and the United States has dominated the headlines and sparked heated political discussion, less developed regions host more than 80% of the world’s refugees. Uganda hosts more than a million refugees from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other neighboring countries. Still other conflicts have sparked mass displacement in Northern Africa, Ukraine, the Caucasus, South Asia and Latin America.

Refugee camps and large reception centers are not safe places for children. We have seen, time and time again, that children without adequate shelter and protection are the most vulnerable to exploitation, abuse and the stress of long-term separation. Without proper support, they are more likely to face lasting educational challenges and social exclusion.

Children deserve more.

How the Refugee Crisis Impacts Children

Worldwide conflict has exacted a severe psychological and physical toll on millions of displaced children. They have seen their childhoods vanish and their families killed. As refugees, these vulnerable children are subject to trafficking, exploitation and discrimination.

How Supporters Like You Are Making a Difference

SOS Children’s Villages supports refugees and displaced children and families in 23 countries around the world. Our work is grounded in our nearly 70 years of experience providing care and protection for children. We protect the most vulnerable, care for children in a safe, stable and family-like care environment, build for the future and advocate for the rights and dignity of refugee and migrant children.

Thanks to generous and caring supporters, we offer assistance to displaced children and their families all along their journey — both in transit and upon arrival in a host country — in the form of shelter, food, medical and psychological support.

Protect Children

Children make up more than half of the global refugee population. Some of these children are separated from their parents in transit, while others have traveled alone from the beginning. Alone on a dangerous journey, children are at high risk of being forced into child labor, human trafficking, or other forms of exploitation.

SOS is able to provide these children: physical and emotional safety, Child friendly spaces and trauma counseling, meet basic needs of food, water, shelter, medicine, and communications (ICT).

Comprehensive, Lasting Care

No one is more vulnerable to the impact of war than a child. That’s why SOS Children’s Villages provides comprehensive care for child refugees and their families. SOS provides a range of services to ensure children have stable, family-like care environment. We work to reunite children with their families, provide interim family based care, and when necessary, build new SOS families for children who have lost their own. Trained counselors work with children to help them confront and ultimately overcome the trauma they’ve experienced in their search for stability.
