Children in Somaliland urgently need your support

Somaliland drought crisis

Somaliland is facing the worst drought in decades. For five years, an unprecedented drought has gripped the entire region—unlike previous droughts that affected only portions of the country—leaving families and children nowhere to seek refuge and in urgent need of relief.

800,000+ children and families forced to leave their homes.

3.4 million people experiencing crisis-levels of hunger.

1.7 million children under five at risk of life-threatening acute malnutrition by December 2025.

Families losing everything

Since 2002, SOS Children’s Villages has provided safe homes and loving families to children without parental care and strengthened families to prevent separation in Somaliland.

With Somaliland entering its fifth year of a severe drought, children and families are in crisis. As a primarily agrarian country, families in Somaliland rely on livestock and crops to earn a sustainable income. But at least 3.5 million livestock have died in the drought, devastating family’s livelihoods, plunging communities into food crises and leaving millions in need of urgent help.

Humanitarian needs are at an all-time high, but we remain dedicated to protecting vulnerable children from malnutrition, displacement and exploitation—bringing decades of emergency expertise and strong local relationships to make a sustainable, lasting impact on those in need.

Our collective impact in Somaliland

Since 2019, with the support of compassionate people like you, we’ve reached more than 290,000 children and families with life-saving humanitarian aid. In 2025 alone, we have:

  • Distributed hygiene kits to more than 3,700 people living in displacement camps.

  • Delivered nutritious food assistance to more than 1,000 people, so children and families have the healthy meals they need to grow, develop and build a brighter future.

  • Established protection committees to serve more than 13,800 people with psychosocial and child protection support, including people with disabilities and those who have survived gender-based violence and neglect.

  • Supported more than 884 individuals with agricultural tools, seeds and tractor services to rebuild their livelihood and earn a sustainable income for their family.

  • Trained 300 community members in climate-smart farming and early-warning systems to build resilience for future droughts and climate crises.
