Earthquake in Venezuela  

On June 24, double earthquakes leveled parts of Venezuela. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes have destroyed homes, overwhelmed hospitals and left children, families and local communities in crisis.  

6.7 million people have been affected.  

An estimated 1.8 million people—including 680,000 children—are in need of shelter, water, sanitation, healthcare and other immediate aid items. 

More than 2,290 people have lost their lives, a number expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.  

More than 11,000 people are injured.  

66% of hospitals in Venezuela experience chronic water shortages. 

Families and children have lost everything   

Since 1978, SOS Children’s Villages has provided safe homes and loving families to children without parental care and strengthened families to prevent separation in Venezuela.  

After the rare and catastrophic double quakes ripped through Venezuela, more than 500 aftershocks followed—leaving children and families in crisis.  

Almost 60,000 homes, schools and hospitals have been damaged or destroyed. Thousands of families have been displaced—left without shelter, access to healthcare and clean, safe drinking water. 

Humanitarian needs are extensive, but we remain dedicated to protecting vulnerable children from violence, malnutrition, family separation and exploitation—all of which are more likely to occur in the chaos of emergency contexts.
