Make your own Mexican clay bowl
Did you know that pottery has been an important part of life in Mexico for more than 3,000 years?
Ancient people would mix clay from the ground with crumbled pottery shards, crushed limestone or even volcanic ash. Then they would use their hands to shape the clay into bowls, plates or even griddles that they would use at home or sell to earn money for their family.
Now, thousands of years later, pottery remains a treasured part of Mexican culture!
Here’s how you can make your own clay bowl today:
Supplies:
— Air dry clay
— Plastic wrap
— A small bowl
— A small cup of water
— Paints and paintbrushes
Instructions:
Step 1: Make your mold.
Cover your small bowl in plastic. This will keep your clay from sticking and help you shape your bowl!
Step 2: Roll your clay.
Roll your clay into a ball. This helps soften the clay, removes any trapped air bubbles and makes sure it all dries evenly. Then, use your hands to flatten the clay.
Step 3: Shape your bowl.
Lay your flattened clay over the bowl. Use your fingertips to gently mold your clay to the shape of the bowl.
Step 4: Smooth your bowl.
Dip your finger into your water cup. Look for any cracks or bumps and use your finger to gently smooth the clay.
Step 5: Let your bowl dry.
Set your clay bowl—still in the mold—in a safe place to dry for 24 hours. Then, gently take the bowl out of the mold and let it dry for another 24 hours.
Step 6: Decorate your bowl!
Now that your bowl is dry, it’s time to paint. Design and paint your bowl however you like. After it dries, you can use it to store your favorite things!
