While evacuation possibilities are still being explored, SOS Children’s Villages in Rafah continues to provide loving care for 89 children in the Gaza Strip. We’re delivering emergency services for more than 200 internally displaced persons including shelter, food, water and sanitation and psychological support. Under the looming threat of a ground invasion and amid ongoing airstrikes, the situation in the densely populated area is extremely critical.

Over 19,000 children are confirmed to have been deported to Russia, many from residential institutions; the estimations though are many times higher. SOS Children’s Villages in Ukraine, which has worked to bring children back to Ukraine, says the war is an opportunity to reform the childcare system, ending institutional care and creating more foster families.

The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to have severe consequences for civilians, particularly those in frontline communities. As of the end of 2023, 3.7 million people remain displaced within Ukraine, while 4.6 million have returned to their places of origin.

The mothers and children here are among the more than 90,000 Ukrainians that have received temporary protection in Austria since the war began. At the Family Café, children enjoy games and crafts and parents get support adjusting to life in Vienna.
