A story of hope: How a girl’s future was transformed in rural Ghana

Every morning, eight-year-old Akida* paused her daily chores, walked to the windowsill and stared longingly at her friends.

Her heart ached as she watched children joyfully walk to school with backpacks filled to the brim with textbooks and school supplies. She wished for nothing more than to join them.

“I was sad most of the time,” said Akida. “I wondered what would happen to my dream of becoming a doctor and building the first hospital in my community.”

After her father’s maize farm caught fire, the family could barely afford food and other basic needs, much less education supplies, fees or uniforms. Her goal of becoming a doctor and making history in her village seemed impossible.

Educational crisis in Ghana

Akida isn’t the only child whose dreams are at risk.

In Ghana, more than one million children don’t attend school.

Many parents dream of sending their children to school, viewing education as a path out of poverty, but they can’t afford school costs, including transportation. An estimated 75% of adults in rural Ghana are farmers, like Akida’s parents—and their income from selling crops barely covers their children’s basic needs.

But those aren’t the only obstacles to quality education. Other barriers include:

Lack of drinkable water. Many children are forced to miss class because they are responsible for fetching water for their family.

Cultural stereotypes that prioritize boys’ education over girls’ education. Girls are often forced to stay home and complete housework, care for their siblings or marry young instead of graduating from school.

Family poverty that leads to child labor, sending children to work instead of to learn.

Education as a fundamental human right

At SOS Children’s Villages, we know education is more than just knowledge—it’s a fundamental human right and the key to unlocking a brighter future.

Education equips children like Akida with the knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to reach their full potential—and strengthens families with the support they need to break cycles of poverty and family separation.

Research continues to show that quality education transforms individual lives and entire communities. Children who have achieved an education are more likely to:

— Earn higher incomes as adults.

— Enjoy better physical and mental health as adults.

— Break generational cycles of poverty, abuse and neglect by achieving economic stability and providing better opportunities for their own children.

How family-strengthening programs remove educational barriers

When SOS teams in Ghana learned about Akida’s situation, they reached out to her father to enroll the family in our holistic family-strengthening program.

Our comprehensive approach delivers economic empowerment, trainings, resources and more for vulnerable families to build a brighter future—including educational support for their children.

Thanks to generous SOS supporters, Akida and her three siblings received critical resources—writing utensils, textbooks, uniforms, school bags, shoes and more—and Akida attended school for the first time at eight years old!

“I love wearing a uniform and going to school,” Akida said.

Breaking gender barriers in education

In the rural community where Akida lives, more boys attend school than girls due to community stereotypes that suggest it’s more valuable to educate boys than girls.

For girls who are forced to drop out of school, they are often required to stay home and complete housework or marry young.

Our family strengthening program combats these stereotypes with community education, advocacy and child protection efforts, ensuring girls receive the same equal access to education as their male peers.

“I make sure Akida is not overwhelmed with housework so she has time for personal studies,” said Akida’s father. “I want to see my children excel to the next level of education. I want to see them graduate and become great people in the community.”

How you can transform children’s futures

Today, more than 250 million children around the world don’t have access to the quality education they deserve. Instead of sitting in classrooms, they’re met with overwhelming barriers—poverty, hunger, school access and more—that keep them from unlocking their full potential.

Every child deserves an education, and your support today can remove barriers that prevent children from learning and building brighter futures.

With your education gift from our Gift Shop—like a backpack, uniform or school kit—you can equip children and families with the resources they need to thrive!

Because when you invest in a child’s education, you’re not just changing their life—you’re unlocking opportunities for generations of children to come.
