Education in crisis: How SOS Children’s Villages delivers learning opportunities for children in Gaza

After almost two years of conflict in Gaza, the destruction is staggering. Homes, health care facilities and more are damaged and destroyed—including 95% of schools and educational facilities.

Now, an entire generation of children in Gaza face a childhood without learning—robbed of the tools, knowledge and support they need to reach their full potential.

But amid the crisis, SOS Children’s Villages is delivering the educational hope more than 500 children need to build a brighter future.

Why education matters—in conflict zones and beyond

Not only is education a fundamental human right, it’s the key children use to unlock a brighter future. Without education, children and young people grow into adults who face lifelong barriers to success.

Research continues to highlight that children and young people who achieve an education are more likely to earn higher incomes and enjoy better health as adults. In conflict zones, these opportunities are even more transformative.

For children in humanitarian emergencies, school is more than learning—it’s a form of child protection, keeping children safe from child labor, exploitation and other forms of abuse that are more prevalent in crisis contexts.

School also provides routine, structure and socialization for children living with trauma, often caused by the conflict. Recognized as a Positive Childhood Experience (PCE), attending school helps facilitate a sense of belonging, nurtures a trusting relationship with a caring adult and provides children with opportunities to grow—all of which reduce the damage of childhood trauma and promotes better adult physical and mental health.

Creating safe learning spaces

And, thanks to compassionate supporters worldwide, more than 500 children in SOS Children’s Villages Khan Younis encampment are learning, growing and building a brighter future.

“Establishing an educational space during this difficult and critical time is very important,” said Ahlam, a third-grade teacher. “We feel honored to continue fulfilling our mission, even in these challenging circumstances.”

With six fully equipped and furnished classrooms, children have access to educational materials and lessons taught by SOS teachers—mitigating conflict-induced learning losses and providing a safe space for young minds to flourish.

“I love coming to school every day, especially for the English class,” said Karem*, a third-grade student. “I enjoy learning, and I come to school with happiness.”
