Emergency update: Myanmar earthquake impact in Thailand

On March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar, with powerful quakes and damage rippling into neighboring countries, including Thailand.

All children, young people, family strengthening participants and staff involved in SOS Children’s Villages Thailand are safe.

In Chiang Rai, the city closest to the epicenter, children were safely evacuated to outdoor assembly points. The earthquake impacted downtown Bangkok significantly. High-rise office buildings, public transport, shopping malls and offices were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

We can confirm that neither our National Office nor SOS Children's Village in Bangpoo, a suburb of Bangkok, reported any safety issues beyond minor shaking. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or significant losses from any of our program locations.

As we continue to monitor the situation, our next steps involve assessing infrastructure and buildings for any potential damage and incorporating necessary maintenance plans accordingly.

At SOS, children’s safety and well-being is always our number one priority. We continue to implement disaster trainings for participants and caregivers in all areas, particularly earthquake-prone regions like Chiang Rai and Phuket. We have established robust partnerships with local authorities to ensure swift and safe evacuations to designated areas.

SOS Children's Villages Thailand remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of all children and staff.

Further updates will be provided as the situation progresses.
