Political Upheaval in the CAR Leads to Worst Humanitarian Crisis in Decades

A recent coup in the Central African Republic has left 4.6 million people – the entire population of the CAR – in need of humanitarian aid. The rebel group taking hold of the government has suspended, indefinitely, all healthcare and medical assistance to a country which was already one of the least developed in the world.

Now, nearly 50,000 people have been forced to flee the country while another 200,000 have been displaced within the CAR itself. The 2.3 million children that call the CAR home are among the most vulnerable victims of the turmoil. Malaria, diarrhea, and child soldiery have already claimed hundreds of lives, and with the entire country in need of medical attention child and infant mortality rates are set to skyrocket.

While emergency relief is not the primary goal of SOS Children’s Villages, we are committed to helping the children and families of the CAR weather this storm. Healthcare, food security, and psychological services for victims of trauma and warfare are all on the SOS agenda in the CAR.

You can be a part of the solution.
