Cape Town, South Africa, February 24, 2017— World-renowned DJ and producer Martin Garrix was announced today as an international friend for SOS Children’s Villages, a non-profit organization that builds families for orphaned, abandoned, and other vulnerable children around the world. Garrix celebrated the announcement with a visit to an SOS Village in Cape Town, South Africa, where he experienced the impact the organization has made on children who have lost their parents.
Worldwide 220 million children have lost their parents or are at risk of losing their parents or caregivers due to poverty, violence and other unfortunate circumstances. As a friend of SOS Children’s Villages, Garrix will raise awareness around SOS's programs, focusing on preventing family separation and providing family-based care for vulnerable children.
“My sister and I grew up with caring parents. We are still very close. I truly believe that they are a big part of my success. Especially since I was only still a kid when my career took off. They were always there. Their unconditional support helped me more than I can say. It is awful that so many children around the world don’t have the support of a caring family,” said Garrix. “As a friend of SOS Children’s Villages, I want to help children and get more people involved.”
During his visit to the SOS Village in Cape Town, Garrix met with children who are growing up in SOS Families. In these families, children are raised by a loving and trained caregiver known as an SOS Mother, and they live with their biological siblings and other children who have lost their parents. To introduce himself to the children, Garrix played a short DJ set.
"It is wonderful to see how SOS Children's Villages creates a family for children worldwide. I know how important family is. I hope that, with my support, SOS can help many more children,” Garrix said.
“We are excited to have Martin Garrix as a new international friend of SOS Children’s Villages,” said Stephen Miller, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages South Africa. “He inspires millions of young people around the globe to live up to their dreams. A perfect match for SOS Children’s Villages.”
