7 February 2014 SOS Children’s Villages USA celebrates #Sochi2014 2/7/2014: On February 7th, 2014, the world will come together to participate in and support the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. With all the challenges and conflicts that many countries currently face, the Olympics are an important symbol of unity, sportsmanship, excellence and hope. SOS Children’s Villages works in most of the countries represented in the 2014 Winter Olympics, and we’re excited to cheer on the exceptional athletes competing for their countries. It has a special place in our hearts, with so many of our global family members living in participating countries. The Olympics has already touched the lives of several of our children. In October of 2013, five boys and five girls from our SOS Village in Pushkin, Russia were given the honor of carrying the Olympic torch through St. Issac’s Square in St. Petersburg. And many SOS children train hard in their favorite sports and aspire to play professionally. Nikolay Kolya of SOS Children’s Village Kandalaksha, Russia, has earned countless medals and a coveted spot on the Russian national youth naturbahn team for his skill in the open air sledding sport. One day, when his sport is added to the Winter Olympics, his name just may be among the competitors. If you’re as excited as we are for the Olympics, join in our celebration! We’re having a little competition of our own on Facebook and Twitter – look for our trivia questions about the Olympics and SOS, and play along with your friends and family. You can download the questions (and answers—but no cheating!) below to play on your own, or you can play via our social networks. Will your trivia knowledge earn the gold? Only time will tell!
