Emergency Response Program

Haiti: Hurricane Mattew

THE SITUATION IN BRIEF

What You Need to Know

In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew battered parts of Haiti, making it the worst natural disaster to hit the poor island nation since the 2010 earthquake. More than 1,000 people were killed, and an additional 1.4 million people were in need of immediate humanitarian aid.

One of the poorest countries in the world, Haiti struggled to provide relief to those affected by the hurricane, many of whom have lost their homes and were forced to seek refuge in temporary shelters. One of the most pressing concerns was a lack of drinkable water, which many feared would hasten the spread of cholera, dengue fever and other water-borne diseases.

How the Hurricane Impacts Children

Of the 1.4 million people who need humanitarian assistance, more than 40 percent are children. Give now to support our relief efforts for children and families in Haiti.

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES IMPACT

How Supporters Like You Are Making a Difference

SOS Children’s Villages has been in Haiti since 1978 and is deeply rooted in the Haitian communities. We have raised thousands of children in our SOS Villages, helped countless families through our Family-Strengthening Programs, and ensured that children from SOS as well as the surrounding community receive a quality education at one of our four SOS Hermann Gmeiner schools. Because of our long-standing presence in Haiti, we were able to respond rapidly to the needs of children in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 hurricane.
