Harissa is a Tunisian hot sauce whose main ingredients are piri piri, herbs, garlic, coriander, and red chili powder. People in Lybia and Algeria also enjoy harissa, and it is a common topping for falafel in Israel. This sauce is very spicy, so eat with caution!
- 11 oz dried red chilies
- ¾ cup chopped garlic
- 2 cups toasted caraway seeds
- ½ tsp coriander seed
- 2 tsp salt
- ¼ cup olive oil
Clean the stems and seeds from the chili peppers and allow them to soak in cold water for 20 minutes. While the peppers are soaking place the garlic, caraway, coriander, and salt in a food processor and pulse until smooth.
Drain the peppers and pat them dry before adding them to the food processor. Pulse until smooth and creamy. Place the mixture in a small bowl and top with olive oil. Eat with falafel or pita bread.
