Humanitarian crisis for 5.3 million children

SITUATION OVERVIEW

 

The ongoing violence and destruction have led to an acute shortage of food, drinkable water, and medical supplies. Children are growing up without access to education, safe places to play, and health care, including mental health care.  

 

Millions of Syrian children and their families have had to leave their homes. More than 6.6 million Syrians are internally displaced, and more than 5.6 million have fled the country, seeking refuge in neighboring countries and across Europe.

SINCE 2012, SOS HAS PROVIDED EMERGENCY RELIEF TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE SYRIAN CONFLICT.

 

OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE WORK IN SYRIA

 

Our emergency response work has involved setting up Child Friendly Spaces and interim care centers to protect unaccompanied children and children who have become separated from their families. SOS has also provided emergency food support, distributing 5,700 integrated food baskets to internally displaced people in and around Damascus and Daraa, and 8,090 food kits to families in Aleppo. 

 

SOS has led or contributed to a range of initiatives to help conflict-affected children, including the All Together Campaign, the Eidiyeh Initiative, My Right to Education and the Keep Me Warm campaign.

 

GETTING FAMILIES BACK ON THEIR FEET

 

In Syria, vulnerable children and families find help through a variety of SOS Children’s Villages programs. Orphans and other children without family care are welcomed at SOS villages. Child Friendly Spaces provide traumatized children with psychosocial support and active learning through play and recreational activities, with a focus on enhancing children’s self-esteem and nurturing friendships and social connection.

 

To get families back on their feet, SOS’s family strengthening programs include parenting support sessions, food assistance to ensure adequate nutrition, and microfinancing to enable parents to set up small businesses to provide a stable income for their families.
